​​Nanobiotechnology

General description

The nanobiotechnology results from the convergence of biotechnology and nanotechnology and defines a new scientific theme of growing importance, which includes two development approaches: one at the nanotools are applied to biological systems, and the other uses the biological systems as templates to develop novel nanodevices. Nanoscience can be described as an interdisciplinary field that seeks to integrate mature nanoscale technology of fields such as physics, biology, engineering, chemistry, computer science and material science.


History

Already in 1959, Richard Feynman (american physicist), even in the absence of the appropriate technologies, predicted that we would be able to manipulate single atoms or molecules, saying that the physic laws wouldn’t be an obstacle for that. Currently, we are manipulating these elements, and we call that nanotechnology, which is an exciting field of science that is making rapid progress in recent years.

Major Applications

Nanomedicine is the dominant and leading field of nanobiotechnology, with applicatins in drug delivery, diagnostics, tissue engineering and therapeutics. But beyond that field we find applications of this technology in other areas, namely, nanocomputing, biological research at the nanoscale, molecular motors devices, and others. So it seems that the biology has much to offer to the physical world, since almost any device, tool or active system known can be mimicked by biological systems. This makes conceivable that in the future, biological systems will be used as building blocks for the construction of the material and mechanical fabric of our daily lives.
